Breast Cancer Diagnosis
To detect or diagnose breast cancer, doctors employ a variety of tests. In addition, tests may be performed to determine whether the cancer has progressed beyond the breast and the lymph nodes beneath the arm. A metastasis is a malignancy that has spread (see the Metastatic Breast Cancer guide for more information). To find out which treatments would work best, doctors may also perform tests.
The only guaranteed way for a doctor to determine if a part of the body has cancer for the majority of cancer types is through a biopsy. During a biopsy, the doctor removes a small piece of tissue to be examined in a lab. The doctor may prescribe additional testing if a biopsy is not feasible.
Diagnosing Breast Cancer
Breast exam. Your doctor will feel for lumps or other abnormalities in your lymph nodes in the armpit as well as both of your breasts.
Mammogram. An X-ray of the breast is what a mammography is. Mammograms are frequently used as a breast cancer screening tool. Your doctor might advise a diagnostic mammography if an abnormality is found on a screening mammogram in order to further assess that anomaly.
Breast ultrasound. Ultrasound employs sound waves to create pictures of inside organs at great depths. If a new breast lump is found to be a solid mass or a cyst filled with fluid, ultrasound may be performed to identify it.
Removing a sample of breast cells for testing (biopsy). The only reliable technique to diagnose breast cancer is through a biopsy. Your doctor performs a biopsy by using a specialized needle instrument to remove a core of tissue from the questionable location while being guided by an X-ray or other imaging test. In order to make the location simple to identify on upcoming imaging examinations, a small metal marker is frequently left at the surgical site inside your breast.
Breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A magnet and radio waves are used by an MRI machine to produce images of your breast’s interior. You get a dye injection before to a breast MRI. An MRI doesn’t employ radiation to produce the images, in contrast to other kinds of imaging procedures.
